The Common Cold

Easy Self-Care Tips

In addition to the numerous amounts of medicines that help manage the common cold, there are several at home treatments that can help manage a cold as well.

Liquids - Whether its chicken noodle soup, hot tea, cold water, or tangy orange juice it is vital that a person drink liquids. Cold liquids encourage mucus production which helps drain mucus out of the nasal passage. On the other hand, hot liquids act as a ventilator because the steam travels through the nasal passages.

Eat Properly - Many people describe that they don't feel like eating when they are sick because they feel tired. However, not providing the body with proper nutrition is not recommended. If a person does not get the proper amounts of vitamins, proteins, fibers, carbohydrates, and essential fats during a cold, then it leaves the body feeling more exhausted. Many doctors encourage eating chicken noodle soup because it is not as 'heavy' compared to bread, it carries good nutrients, and the soup's vapors help decongest a stuffy nose.

Rest - Resting when having the common cold is very important. Getting proper rest lets the body create enough white-blood cells to fight the cold. In result, doctors suggest between 7 and 9 hours a night.
